Using the Import Classification Sheets Assistant

The Import Classification Sheets Assistant guides you through the process of importing classification data for sources or nodes from a tab-delimited text file—refer to Import (or export) classification sheets for more information.

This topic explains the options on each step of the Assistant.

Assistant step Description

Select the file to import

Locate and select the text file that contains the data you want to import.

You can specify the format of the text file:

  • File encoding  Displays the file encoding that will be used to interpret the text file. NVivo tries to detect the file encoding used in the file. If you cannot import the data correctly, try using a different file encoding.

  • Text qualifier  Displays the character (double quotation marks) that must encloses text values in your text file. All text enclosed within double quotation marks is imported as one value, even if the text contains a delimiter character (tab). In this release you cannot change the text qualifier.

Specify how to classify sources or nodes

Classification type  This option allows you to select the type of classification you are importing—you can select:

  • Node classification

  • Source classification

You must also choose whether you want to:

  • Create new classification  If you select this option you must enter a name for the new classification

  • Import to existing classification  When you select this option, you must select the existing classification from the list

Create new attributes if they do not exist  If you select this option, any unmatched attributes will be added to the classification

Update the classification of existing sources or nodes   If you select this option, existing sources or nodes that have a different classification will be updated—the classification will be changed (attributes may also change), and attribute values will be updated.

Replace attribute values of existing sources or nodes that appear in this file  If you select this option, the attribute values of any matching items in your project will be updated. Note: when you select this option, the option Update the classification of existing sources or nodes is automatically selected.

Specify the format of source or node names in the file you are importing
  • As names  This option is not available in this release.

  • As hierarchical names  The full hierarchical name of each source or node must be entered in the first column, as follows

  • For nodes—the hierarchical name includes the folder path, the hierarchical node structure and the name of the node. Folders are separated by two backslashes (\\) and nodes are separated by a single backslash (\). Refer to Hierarchical source and node names for more information.

  • For sources—the hierarchical name includes the folder path and the name of the source. Folders are separated by two backslashes (\\). Refer to Hierarchical source and node names for more information.

Create new sources/nodes if they do not exist  If you select this option, sources or nodes are created if they cannot be matched to existing items in your project at the location you specified in your import file. Unmatched sources are created as externals.

Specify how your data will be imported

This step of the Assistant shows how your data will be imported. In this release, you cannot change these settings, however you can use the information displayed here to ensure that the data in your file is formatted correctly:

  • Unassigned and Not Applicable attribute values must be represented in the import file by the words 'Unassigned' and 'Not Applicable'—refer to Work with attribute values for more information on these attribute values.

  • Dates, times and numbers must be in the formats specified in your system preferences (Language & Text). If the formats do not match, you should reformat your data to match the dates, times and numbers formats in your system preferences.
